I’m about to get in a fight with Heckran, so I’ll make it quick. The best time period is 600 AD, and I am basing this purely on the awesome music. Discuss!

This post is probably a joke. I just wanted to clear that up for Jatopian.

2300 AD, because what happens to the world in the future is really surreal and really atmospheric. It doesn’t make the most sense, but besides the lame factories it’s awesome.

12000 BC with Zeal, the Ocean Palace… the atmosphere and music for that place was really, really amazing.

Also, who can forget 1999 AD?

Um, then why bother posting in the Chrono Trigger forum?

I have a hard time choosing between the time periods…I really, really wanna see 1999 A.D. It just makes me…wonder what the world was like in the CT universe before it was totally destroyed. Sure, in Chrono Cross they revealed what happened during the destruction of Lavos, but I still wanna see it.

Actually, I saw a mini-map for the overworld of 1999 A.D. in the new DS version…I wonder if they planed to have overworld stuff before but never got around to it…

But, I love the Undersea Palace, that’s where it all goes down. The mega climax, the big showdown, heart racing as you run, run, and run towards the ending of it all hoping you’ll make it…

I guess 12,000 B.C. but…I like most of the time periods, so I can’t really tell. The future is awesome because it’s the future. The present is a nice getaway from it all, 600 A.D. is cool medieval stuff, prehistoric stuff has cavemen and dinosaurs. They’re all pretty wicked.

I cannot choose. I like all of them for different reasons. Well, except the prehistoric era - I felt that one was underdeveloped. I think 2300 was when I got hooked, though. Oh, and I didn't care much for the End of Time because it introduced the 3-character party limit that stopped making sense later on, and also Spekkio.

12,000 BC. It’s totally unexpected, awesome, and has some sweet bosses. 65m BC is also good.

I’m a sucker for post-apocalyptic settings, so 2300 A.D. has a huge vote from me. That, and I loved doing the Geno dome sidequest for some odd reason. Zeal had perhaps some of the greatest plot in the game, and 600 A.D. wins in terms of battles and music.

C’mon, 600 A.D. wins by default for having Frog.

      sprite dragonbattousai

600 A.D. because of Wind Scene, Frog’s Theme, Masamune, Magus, Frog, and everything else.

Hmm, no one likes 1000 AD best? I guess it is pretty boring compared to all the other times. I’d have to say I like 12,000 BC the best. The design of the islands are just so cool, yet the ground is covered in snow and ice. Plus, the music was sweet!

I also liked the End of Time. The setting feels like a city you’d see in an old detective movie or something, plus Gaspar would be a fun guy to hang out with.

Okay now I have time for more in-depth analysis. Woo analysis!

65 mil BC is good times, though I agree with Jato about it being underdeveloped — but it also has two groovy dungeons (even if I still don’t get how the holes work) and your first flying transportation (even if it only goes to the lair.) I like the trading house, too, although it kinda sucks that their “ultimate item” is really quite crap by the time you can get. Basically, the only reason to go back after you’ve finished off the Reptites is to get the Silver Stone from the name-changing Nu.

12,000 BC is good during the fun bits. I always get to Mt. Woe anticipating fighting the Rubbles and being able to steal funky-fresh weapons, but by the end of it the absolutely arbitrary battles have destroyed my resolve. Zeal is fine and the Blackbird is too, but overall the whole area feels like too much of a trip; I might compare it to the the giant robot from FF2, for example. It just seems to me like a departure from the time-hopping that precedes it, I guess. But hey, Dalton’s a pretty cool guy.

600 AD is the best. The Cathedral is introductory without holding your hand too much, the framework of the Human-Mystic (or ’fiend’) war dictates the pace brilliantly, and Magus’s Castle is a perfect midpoint denouement. No other era stands alone in defining its own storyline as well as the Middle Age does. Yes, there are connections to the other times, but through Zenan Bridge and up the Denadoro Mountains you really feel like you’re instrumental in the central conflict as well as the larger story of the impending armageddon. It ultimately doesn’t matter that Magus didn’t create Lavos, because defeating him ends the war, bringing peace to the time… and there’s still Giant’s Claw and Cyrus’s grave to look forward to.

1000 AD is nifty for being an area entirely engulfed in peace. Yes, there are a few disturbances (another Yakra? Way original, stupid monsters) but everywhere you go, residents are generally chipper and life is good. That’s a rarity in the majority of RPGs.

And 2300 AD, well, what can you say about an area that exists after the chief antagonist has succeeded in their nefarious plan? I have a similar issue with it as I do with 65 mil, in that once you’ve taken off with Robo you don’t particularly go back except to drop in for the Epoch and then during the endgame subquests, but it’s got bike racing and a neat implementation of its own re-exploration drive in the pendant-powered doors. I give it 3 stars.

I like the End of Time as an exercise in the “home base” mentality that all party-based games need to have; it makes sense in the greater context of the game. But it’s no airship. I once tried a game where I only swapped party members when I was actually at the End and it made me frustrated, but I’m thinking I’ll try it again sometime anyway.

This post is probably a joke. I just wanted to clear that up for Jatopian.

600 AD because of Frog, Magus and Ozzie.
12,000 BC because it’s completely unexpected, it has a huge part in the story and it’s where the Epoch gets wings.
I hate 2300 AD dungeons, especially at the beginning, but the atmosphere there is awesome. Really. Belthasar’s story, the people who still struggle to live, the robots… and Robo, obviously.

          Of course it’s underdeveloped, it’s 64mil BC.

I don’t remember too much about my SNES playthrough, but I’m not so far into the DS playthrough to actually make a final decision, but so far, it’s prehistoric for me. Smash skull, caveman speech and the rockin music make it awesome, even if it would have been better with more substance.

Zeal, because it was so unexpected

This. I really thought I had seen ever era in the game by the time I went up against Magus, and while I already had Chrono Trigger pegged as a fantastic game it wasn’t until 12,000 BC that I realized how rich the game’s story really was. Although, most of my favorite characters and moments from the game originate in 600 AD, and 2300 AD has a great atmosphere.

65 million BC is the only era I’m not particularly thrilled to play through… though I’ve got to admit, Tyranno Castle is one of the best dungeons ever.

I don’t know. Each time has its own awesomeness. The dino castle place in 65,000,000 B. C. is awesome, I like how it shows dinosaurs being more advanced than humans, but then dying out. Zeal is awesome because it’s got people working for Lavos, instead of against it, and Queen Zeal is an awesome corrupted ruler. I like corrupted rulers. Also, Dalton is awesome, with all his Golems, especially his last one. 600 A.D. has Frog, who is awesome, and has awesome music, and also Ozzie. 1,000 A.D. has the awesome trial scene, which is my favorite scene in the game, because it actually gives consequences for your actions, and the whole cause and effect thing is just amazing. And 2,300 A.D. is post-apocalyptic, and the Geno Dome sidequest is awesome, with the whole human processing plant thing. Also, Robo/Prometheus is awesome. It’s so hard to choose.
