Clayman W sprite Chrono Trigger = Not that great?

Please don't kill me....

sprite Titan

I recently bought Chrono Trigger for the DS a few days ago, and I must say, I’m not impressed.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the game, but there’s nothing really appealing to it. So if you all could answer this question for me: What makes Chrono Trigger so great?

    woah wait a second

when you were re-posting this topic I thought you were going to tell us why you didn’t like it, which would have made for some interesting conversation

that being said, this topic already exists, which is pretty much exactly what you are asking in your last sentence there

I am an incredibly over-lock-happy mod sort of like a parking-ticket-hungry cop but I think I will give this topic a half chance if you explain WHY you don’t like it in more detail instead because that sounds like a cool discussion topic.

    sprite Titan

      Um.. alright then.
-First off, the combat is really, really boring. Seriously, I dread the next battle. It looks real nice, with the ATB gauge, and the Dual techs and such, but it makes it overly complicated and hides the fact that it’s simply a slow, turn-based battle.
-The enemies you fight are normally just these tiny little suckers that are boring and unimaginative.
-Besides Crono and the gang, the rest of the character sprites are the same: boring
-The levels are detailed, yet dull. Say I took a realy close up picture of a rock. It would be incredibly detailed, yet it would still be a boring old rock. The levels are the same. they have really nice looking stone walls, or flickering torches, but that is repeated throughout the entire level.
-The music SUCKS. Seriously, there is not one memorable tune I can think of. Not to mention the sound effects are cruddy, uninspired.

      1. wtf overly complicated??? all you have to do is attack for most of the game except against key enemies, you can just use dual techs whenever you feel like it p. much. It’s really simple unless you’re doing like a low-level-game or you’re dreadfully underprepared.

Bonus: Try turning the battle speed up to the max. I always did that, that might help you a bit.

      2. Unimaginative? Maybe you’ve seen too many episodes of DBZ or something because the character designs I actually found pretty interesting. Giant spine-monster? Possessed electronic control system? I’m not sure what you’re looking for here, they’re some of the best on the SNES. Sure, they’re not as amazing as FF6 but they’re animated from multiple angles and it’s cool. Can you… elaborate?

      3. Yeah, but not everyone on the street looks amazing. I am not sure what your frame of reference is here, I think most of the characters look like they are supposed to.

      4. That is actually a legitimate complaint but the areas still look like they are supposed to, perhaps you haven’t gotten anywhere interesting yet

      5. no, no, wait, what the hell is wrong with you? what’s wrong with the music? doesn’t the main theme inspire you? doesn’t the music in guardia forest have any effect on you at all? What kind of music do you like?

      question for you:

      - how far are you in this game

      sprite Smash Bass

OK, the sound effects are bad placed sometimes, but the music is epic. I have like 5 or 6 songs I’m always thinking of since I began to play the game.

TT: In some cultures the persistent refusal of a lady’s invitation to play a game with her would be a sign wanton disrespect.
TT: Either that, or flagrant homosexuality.

      sprite Dylan

The music is awesome, what are you talking about?

        sprite Titan

          Yay, debates!
I’ve just gotten to “The End of Time” for the first time. In other words, I just recieved Robo on my team.

          1-

          1. wtf overly complicated??? all you have to do is attack for most of the game

I worded that poorly. I meant it seems overly complicated. Also, that’s another good point. All you have to do is mash the attack button, or blow all of your Dual Techs. There’s not much strategy.

2- Maybe it’s just the point I’m at in the game, but all I’ve seen so far really is blue birds, theses little imp-like things, rats, and generic-looking robots, to name a few.

          3- You got me there.

4- Nope, just a castle, and old factory, and a bleak future.

5- Maybe I was too harsh. The music doesn’t suck, it just doesn’t seem to fit some situations. The battle theme isn’t really intense by any means, and that’s what I’m looking for: an intense battle with intense music. Unfortunately, I found neither. I will admit, the music in Guardia forest is a bit chilling.

You didn’t think the mutants were cool? I thought they looked cool, along with the man-eating plants. Talk about weird. Also the robots have pretty good designs.

Wait, doesn’t the bleak future look really awesome to you, with the broken domes and fallen skyscrapers all over the place? I thought it looked great.

Anyway I don’t mind if you don’t like the game (it’s personal opinion) but there are some things about CT that I can’t fathom people not liking.

          sprite Smash Bass

Wait until you get more characters and your options for Dual Techs and Triple Techs will increase greatly, and by greatly, I mean GREATLY, mostly because my English vocabulary isn’t very big as of now. But anyway, this gives you a wide variety of moves to choose from, therefore adding strategy.

Also, you will need strategy for bosses and particular enemies. Specially for the final boss (not that hard once you get the hang of it, but it is hard to figure out how to take it down).

To be fair, SNES graphics on the DS aren’t quite as impressive as they were on the big screen. But the detail is still evident. Take a good close look — these were state-of-the-art 24-bit full-palette graphics in 1995. How many games from that era bothered to animate the wind blowing through the grass?

          sprite Titan

Man, this is nice. Having a discussion without getting my head ripped off.

I guess I’ve just played too much Armored Core. There’s all sorts of crumbled buildings an domes in there. Anyways, I guess I’ll just have to get farther into the game and hope it impoves.

Don’t worry, it gets way better half way through the game.

What do you think about the boss music? It totally stresses me out; it’s as intense as you can get. The normal battle theme is enjoyable to me. I like knowing that it’s just a regular thing and I don’t have to worry too much.

And I guess I should also add that my favorite part about this game is the music, so I really can’t relate to your opinion in the first place. :B

I thought most of the music in the game was really inspired and imaginative. Even though I haven’t played CT in like over 9 years I still find myself humming the middle ages music on occasion. The thing with this game is you need to come into it expecting nothing. If you are expecting the greatest game ever then you will probably be disappointed, but if you come in expecting a fun romp that may take a couple of twists, turns and may even leave you with a smile at the end then you will be blown away. Rest assured everything grows on you in time. I wasn’t too thrilled with it until about half way through the game and that is where everything clicked and I fell in love with it.

Judging from his comments, I think he’s just before the End of Time.

I disagree with the whole “well keep playing it gets better” notion; I’ve found that most players are either hooked immediately, or they get there when they reach the future. (Surely you were impressed when you found out that the ultimate bad guy had already gone through with destroying the world so early in your adventure?)

                sprite Titan

True, that was cool. I also like how you can fight the (presumably) final boss that early. You can also get murdered that early Maybe I was just expecting too much. Regardless, I plan on playing it to the end, whether I like it or not, ’cause I really want to see how this turns out.

                    sprite hyruleboy

I have to say that I LIKE the game, but I don’t love it.

As for the music, most of it is just plain forgettable, I do agree that the main theme(I think it is the main theme at least, it plays at the first stage of the final battle, right?) is pretty awesome.
I think the only thing I really liked a lot was how Robo’s theme sounded like “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

The battle system just kinda annoys me, I mean, I know they wanted to get away from random battles,(I HATE those things) but having to fight the same little creatures no matter what is still annoying as well.

-“A slow, turn-based battle”? Did something not connect and you forgot that this was a JRPG? This is about as fast as it got back in the day.
-I agree for the most part: the enemies get better later on, but they are boring in the beginning with the exceptions of Gato and the mutants (which you still haven’t told us your opinion of)
-Doesn’t that seem a little bit nit-picky? I mean, most RPGs even today only use a handful of different NPC sprites/models
-At least try to make it to Zeal and then come back to us on that one

Okay, I changed my mind about the music. I LOVE Frog’s theme, and the Middle Ages theme grows on you too. I’ve also decided that Ayla is my favorite character. I mean, seriously, some of the things she says:
“You drink skull-smash juice. Called skull-smash juice, because when wake up, skull feel like smash.”
She then challenged you to a battle. Not just any battle… a drinking contest. Later, after an epic battle with Nizbel, shew proceeds to vomit mid-sentence.

Anyways, I don’t know if I was in a bad mood or what, but most of my complaints were just nit-picky. I do have one complaint though. Why did they have to make such good party members? I always run into trouble when deciding what people to use. I hate leaving Robo behind, but Lucca’s fire powers are so useful….

The battle theme isn’t really intense because you aren’t very far into the game, and most of the enemies thus far are pretty much comical. On the other hand, bosses like the dragon tank have some pretty epic music.

Compare “there’s always time for a little fun” to “those who transgress must be punished.” It was a lot more obvious then that he didn’t care much about the tos and fros of 600 AD, because he was so intent on fulfilling his revenge, but now his motives seem kind of muddled.

You get this a lot from people with RPG titles, when they didn’t play the initial release, in this case on the SNES, they miss the innovations the game brought to the table. It’s along the same lines as you can tell when someone started playing games based off a simple question: Which is the better title, FF VI or FF VII? Doesn’t always work, but the huge majority of the time you can guess the age of a person, or when they started playing RPGs with that simple question.

If you go back now and play Chrono without any knowledge of why its as important as it is in development of the genre, of course you’re going to miss out on some of the joy of it. It’s not as pretty as modern games, but what it does is execute well, which is more than you can say for a lot of modern games. The story isn’t mythic and huge, but its tight and well brought across without a lot of plot holes and deus ex machina. The battle system is simple, but still customizable with dual and triple techs, team combinations and enemy weaknesses. It’s executed well. The music is well suited to the story and doesn’t step all over your toes when you play it, it just fits. So no, it doesn’t have the giant, sweeping story of a Final Fantasy Tactics, or the rough battle system of a Shin Megami Tensei, or the dominating music of a Mega Man title, but it does have one thing: It executes everything nearly flawlessly. It’s a joy from start to finish because it just feels like its been polished and cared for by the development team.

All you won’t show. The boxes you brought here and never unpacked are still patiently waiting to go. So put on those clothes you never grew into and smile like you mean it for once. If you come back, bring a new name for everything.

I uh, don’t think we should have to know a bunch of history to play a game, sorry. CT stands quite well on its own. I think we should judge things in absolute terms and not bother with things that are "good for their time" anyway.

                            face+flag=semaphore

CT stands well on its own because we understand the limitations of the system it was on. If you wanted to talk about video games in a vacuum, you’d spend all your time wondering why Earthbound doesn’t look as good as Little Big Planet. Like it or not, every opinion we have is at least somewhat based on our knowledge of history.

Now, no one is saying you should be able to tell us what chips ran the Famicom, but a basic understanding of where CT comes in the order of game releases is pretty much necessary to have a proper discussion about it. That’s like saying someone who picked up CT at launch date is no more likely to have been impressed than someone who picked it up immediately after playing Valkryie Profile. It’s just not true, because the historical context is just that: contextual. And context is fairly important in a discussion like this. You know, given this is a guy who clearly wasn’t that impressed by the game standing on its own merit. So what I’m positing is that maybe part of what he missed out on is the context.

If you think nostalgia has nothing to do with our love of NES, SNES and even more classic titles, you’re deluding yourself.

I’m deluding myself? So what you’re saying is that I actually did have a game console as a child and simply hallucinated that I never did?

Nope, sorry, nostalgia isn’t applicable for games that I played for the first time less than a year ago.

I liked it. IMO it rivals the Mother series _

I, for one, love Chrono Trigger (And I’m a new player, I never got my hands on the SNES version.)
That is because of the cool almost live battle system, the time travel, and characters like Ayla (I don’t know why, just that whole part made me laugh. She’s gotta be my favorite character.)

Nah, I’m afraid that Chrono Cross brings it down a lot. It was kind of like FF7 with better music; one can even transfer characters between the two, in a way.

As much as I like Mother, I wholeheartedly agree with this!

Chrono Cross did not bring it down – it transformed a great game into a great game series. The music is amazing, the artwork is beautiful, and the plot is incredible. The whole alternate dimensions thing is really neat! Plus, I love how it subtly connects itself to Trigger. Unlike some sequels that just reuse the same characters in yet another adventure, CC actually sets itself in the Chrono universe in a clever way. I admit a lot of the characters could have been expanded upon a bit more, but the major ones are all still fairly interesting.

Er... she asks that about Glenn in the SNES version, but that’s the only time I remember it happening. I wouldn’t be surprised if her characterization was worsened as well as Magus’s in the DS version, though.

Except the battle system. It was awful. I mean, I’m still playing it, but I dread the battles because I have no clue what’s going on. This is the only instance where I read the manual twice and still don’t understand.

Ironically, I played Chrono Cross many years before I ever played Chrono Trigger. The result was me loving Cross and finding Trigger to be nothing but an overrated hype machine that doesn’t live up to its reputation. I respect the game for the flagships in gaming that it pioneered, and for what it was at the time it came out, but I really did not enjoy it all that much. That may be due to my expectations being set much too high before playing it, but the entire time I was playing it I was thinking “this gets better right?” It just didn’t do much for me. Even the soundtrack seemed lame to me after what I had come to expect from the music in Cross (which is one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time).
