Okay. Let me start off by saying I definitely don’t go out of my way to watch this show. In fact, I think it’s terrible. At work, I take my break and just usually go lie on the couch in the break room and listen to music, and sometimes this show is on.

Basically this religious (Christian maybe, I don’t think it’s really relevant) family is barraged by cameras and they just sort of have lots of kids.

Each and every one of the kids names starts with the letter ‘J’. There are 18 kids. Or 19, I think they had another. Imagine, being any of these kids for a moment. You’re growing up, making friends, maybe you find someone you like.

“Oh hey, meet my family. This is Jinger. This is Jeremiah, here’s Janet, that ones Jimmy, this is James, John, Janelle, Jake, Jan, Julie-”

18 kids. MAYBE like 50 years ago this would have made sense; you need people to help farm and work. I can’t even comprehend how this is going to affect these kids in the future. Having an immediate family with OVER 15 BROTHERS/SISTERS? The mom, Anna (I think) has spent over 25 years of her life nursing.

I don’t think this is good. Maybe it’s me, but I don’t see how I could get along with 15+ siblings. I can’t even get along with my one sister. The last bit of the last episode I saw, the family was in some sort of parade. I’m pretty sure it was just the whole family on a truck driving around a town.

Have you ever seen or heard about this? I’d like to know how everyone else feels about it. I don’t think it’s a good idea at all, but it’s not like I can say “hey stop making babies” and I mean sure everyone has a right to live, but like, auuugh. why? For what purpose? Does the world really need families with 20 kids? It’s almost like they are being greedy, but it’s a gosh darn person’s life we’re talking about here.

All ranting aside, what do you all think of this?

[SimonBob] I cried because I had no life. Then I met a man who had no continues.

sparn

Oh, don’t worry, I’m sure the kids will be fine! After all, they have the benefit of being the focus of a television show and their lives are under constant pressure and scrutiny by the public.

…Oh. wait. crap.

That’s what I’m going for here. Obviously we’re not going to start killing off these kids, but the only word I can come up with here is ’unnecessary’. The mother may not be inconvenienced by spending half her life nursing, but I don’t see how the kids aren’t (inconvenienced) with having to share everything with their siblings and spend their entire childhood in the equivalent of a small community. That lives in one house.

I’m torn on these people. Apparently they make tons of money and don’t have any problems actually providing for their children. But at the same time...19 kids? Really? The world is starting to get a little crowded nowadays. I’m not suggesting we should start killing off old people to make room or put a limit on how many children you can have, but 19 kids is more than a little excessive. It just seems like they’re popping out kids for the fun of it at this point. "Well, we’ve already had this many, may as well keep going!"

This statement is so false it isn’t even funny. It would take a few Billion more people before the world started feeling cramped.

Honestly, I don’t have any problem with people having lots of kids. I know several families that have offspring reaching the double digits and I don’t think that it is all that problematic. If the parents (and eventually the older siblings) can raise these kids well, more power to them.

That said, I highly disagree with the idea of a TV crew following them.

Spyden, the world is hella cramped. Have you ever been to China? here. And tell me we’re not using up all our resources because we have to keep everyone who is currently alive, alive.

To stay on topic, for the entirety of what I have seen on the show, it’s basically "Oh look at that huge family!" It’s one thing to have a whole bunch of kids. But why in hell does everyone need to know about it? Sure it’s TLC or whatever (don’t get me started on ’Babies in Tiaras’ or whatever) but this whole thing just irks me. I’d be embarassed if I were one of those kids. It would just be too weird.

Populations grow exponentially, especially now that people live longer lives. It honestly won’t take long for a world-wide population of six billion to grow to eight.

I don’t know but they could be polygamists or something like that. I won’t go against anyone’s beliefs, but I think it’s just becoming a way of trying to get more viewers now. I seriously get disgusted by people who have those TV shows about having tons of kids. I don’t think it’s cute, I don’t find it interesting, I don’t think I should pay these families my respect of watching their shows. Don’t they want their kids to grow up normally without calling the camera a family member?
These people are going to keep doing it and doing it until the end of time, or perhaps until her TV show comes to an end.
These shows are all just made for publicity. Now it’s time for more struggling couples with more than 8 kids to come out of the closet and attempt to get rich. There are probably many other families like this out there who are making it just fine without their own TV show.

And remember, that’s just how I feel about it.

I’ll probably get some flack for this, but I think the rule (if we needed one at all, which is a wholly different debate) should be “sterilization after you have a kid of each gender.” Look at the trouble they have in China, where healthy babies “mysteriously” die at birth just because they came out the wrong gender. If those families knew they could keep having kids until they got one of each, they wouldn’t have such a massive disparity in the gender ratio under the age of 30.

(Odori: After some of the stories I’ve heard even that wouldn’t be a guarantee).

I don’t absolutely despise 3-kid families, and I can cope with a 4-kid family, but 18 is more than a ‘bit much’. I’m sure they would have made fantastic surrogate parents, and then it’d have meant it’d be useful for families who want kids but can’t have them, and they’d still get to enjoy what it appears they must do when it comes to pregnancy. But in this situation I don’t see how this is anything useful to anyone, including the kids (the older of which probably spend a lot of time looking after the younger ones — surely some of them are at leaving-home age as well?). Terrible as it sounds I actually think this is selfish of the mother. I don’t care how she tries to rationalise it raising kids in a manner where everyone feels equal (and not neglected) is often hard enough and I can only imagine there are casualties in this family for it. Even if they don’t show now there’s a chance of that rearing up in the future.

Consider that this one group of children can fill a classroom. How fair is that to anyone?

I’ve seen this show. They’re Catholic, or Mormon, not sure which. You know, that whole ‘Be fruitful’ thing. It’s pathetic. They’ve gotten a HUGE house built for them, the dad’s barely pulling in more than what me and my husband make a year, which is sad, because I know we’re well below poverty line, and to top it off, they homeschool all 19 of those kids. And, I’m betting, since they’re religious, they could claim a part of their house as a church, and get paid to live there.

Hell, I have three siblings, and I get names switched, and I’m 23! Imagine, not only having that many of your own kids, but all with J names. I’d be at that point of ‘Hey, kid number 15! get your a— over here!’

Honestly, acting like a puppy mill isn’t going to make me watch that show more than I had to. My mom watched it a few times, and we were both amazed at the stupidity by the end of it all.

Resistance is useless!

sprite Drlupinmario

^Catholic. Im pretty sure its Catholics who dont belive in birth control. Not sure about Mormons.

sprite PinkIceFox

I really dont like people who try to have over 5 kids. Its perfectly fine by me if by some genetic spasm that you have like 6 kids at once, but you if pop out a kid again and again and again after you’ve healed up from the last time you really need to stop having kids. Especially if you’re doing it because of the religion. It’s fine to not believe in things to prevent pregnancy, but really. Stop screwing like jackrabbits. There is no logical reason in this day in age in a developed country for you to still be popping out kids. Especially if your oldest kids are starting to have some themselves.

And dear god. If all the kids they have think this is ok… I sure do hope the women who marry the sons have common sense. Two is a just fantastic number for children.

I totally wish that I’d stop hearing about this family. Kind of like I dont want to hear about Jon/Kate and Otctomom.

polaris: As I said before, it’s not about them having the kids, it’s more about how those kids are getting raised. Which I don’t imagine is ‘very well’ since the very act of raising kids (from birth to 18+) is quite an undertaking, and if she’s just pumping out more it means they’ll have less time to ensure the kids get the care they need. It would have made more sense if she had gone the surrogate route (I’m sure God would have preferred they use this ‘gift’ to help others), and I wonder just how well these kids are really going to be when they hit the real world, if they actually hit the real world rather than continue to help mother pour more out.

Whoa, there’s a lot of random ranting going on in here. After doing a little research it would appear that the family isn’t Catholic but rather Conservative Baptist. The wife used birth control for a while but when her 2nd pregnancy ended in a miscarriage she blamed it on the birth control, so she decided to let God decide how many kids they’ll have. They’re debt-free and own commercial and residential property, so while the husband may not appear to make much, they’re not struggling for money. Please do some research before you start condemning people, kthnx.

And that is how I escaped my certain doom.
